| 1993 | Mike Stanley, with the Yankees trailing by two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, hits a pop fly to left field for the apparent third out to end the game; however, third-base umpire Tim Welke called time before the pitch when a fan jumped onto the Yankee Stadium field. Given a second chance, the Bronx Bomber catcher singles, followed by a Wade Boggs hit, a walk to Dion James, and a Don Mattingly single that drives in two runs to beat the Red Sox, 4-3. Stanley hit more than twenty home runs in a season three times during his career. His best all-around season at the plate came in 1993 with the Yankees, when he hit .305 with twenty-six homers and eighty-four RBI. He also hit .300 in 1994, and he notched a career-high twenty-nine homers in 1998. Stanley became a first baseman/designated hitter at the end of his career. He finished as a .270 career hitter with 187 homers, 702 RBI and a .370 career on-base percentage. Stanley also hit well in the postseason, recording a .356 batting average and .434 on-base percentage in five postseason series. Stanley was one of the players involved in the only Yankees/Red Sox trade in the last quarter-century, as of 2012.[2] As a Ranger, Stanley caught the last of Nolan Ryan's seven career no-hitters on May 1, 1991.[3] On June 27, 1987, he hit the first ever pinch grand slam in Rangers history against the Twins. Following his retirement as a player, Stanley was hired to serve as bench coach for the Red Sox during the 2002 season. He resigned after the season to spend more time with his family.

| 2010 | After finishing a victory short of the milestone twice during his distinguished career, CC Sabathia becomes a 20-game winner for the first time when the Yankees beat the Orioles 11-3. The left-hander, who leads both leagues in victories, is the fourth Bronx Bomber since 2000 to reach the plateau, adding his name to a list that includes Roger Clemens (2001), Andy Pettitte (2003), and Mike Mussina (2008).   CC House Carsten Charles Sabathia Jr. (born July 21, 1980) is an American former professional baseball pitcher who played 19 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Cleveland Indians, Milwaukee Brewers, and the New York Yankees. Sabathia batted and threw left-handed. Sabathia made his major league debut with the Indians in 2001 and placed second in the 2001 AL Rookie of the Year voting behind 2001 AL MVP Ichiro Suzuki. Sabathia played the first seven-and-a-half seasons of his career with the Indians, with whom he won the 2007 Cy Young Award. He led the Indians to the 2007 AL Central Division title and their first postseason berth since his rookie year. Following a trade, Sabathia played the second half of the 2008 MLB season with the Milwaukee Brewers, helping them make the playoffs for the first time in 26 years. In the 2008 offseason, Sabathia signed with the New York Yankees for seven years and $161 million; at the time, this was the largest contract ever signed by a pitcher. With the Yankees, Sabathia led all of Major League Baseball in wins in both 2009 and 2010 and won a World Series ring in 2009. He was also voted the 2009 American League Championship Series Most Valuable Player. After mid-career struggles attributed to lost fastball velocity, chronic knee injuries, and alcoholism, Sabathia again found success in the late 2010s after reinventing himself as a control pitcher. In February 2019, he announced that 2019 would be his final season as a professional baseball player. During his career, Sabathia was named an All-Star six times and won the Warren Spahn Award three times in a row (2007–09). In August 2017, Sabathia became the all-time American League leader in strikeouts by a left-handed pitcher. On April 30, 2019, he became the seventeenth pitcher in MLB history to reach 3,000 strikeouts and the third left-hander to do so (joining Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton). When he retired following the end of the 2019 season, he led all active Major League players in career wins, career innings pitched, and career strikeouts. Sabathia is also the first (and thus far, only) pitcher with at least 250 career wins that made their major league debut in the 21st century, and has won more games across the 2000s and 2010s combined than any other major league pitcher. |
