1928

Forty-year-old veteran Ty Cobb and 41 year-old Tris Speaker, who spent last season with the Senators, both start in the outfield on Opening Day for the A's, batting second and third, respectively. The 8-3 loss to the Yankees at Philadelphia's Shibe Park marks the first time the future Hall of Famer players have played as teammates in a game.

1954

The Yankees trade two minor leaguers and rookie right-hander Mel Wright to the Cardinals in exchange for 38-year-old right-fielder Enos Slaughter. The future Hall of Fame outfielder will hit only .239 in 79 games during his first tenure with the Bronx Bombers, but Bill Virdon, one of the prospects dealt to the Redbirds, will be named the National League's Rookie of the Year in 1956.

2003

Although, Dale Petroskey still would cancel the 'Bull Durham celebration due to the anti-war criticism espoused by Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, the Hall of Fame president wishes he had called the co-stars rather than just sending a letter. The decision creates a firestorm with Cooperstown receiving over 5000 emails as well as noted author Roger Kahn canceling his planned August appearance to speak about his new book "October Men," a work chronicling the 1978 World Champion Yankee team, as a protest.  Bull Durham (Video Stream)

2006	Bob Sheppard misses his first Yankee Stadium home opener since 1951 after sustaining a hip injury at his home yesterday. The long-time public address announcer will return to the microphone during the team's next homestand.

In a game that features President Woodrow Wilson throwing out the first pitch, Washington's Walter Johnson gives up an unearned run in the first inning of the home opener, but the 'Big Train' will not yield another tally for 56 innings. (That streak is like Joe DiMaggio 56 game hit streak). The Senators beat the team now known as the Yankees, 2-1, switching from the Highlanders, the nickname the team had used since the franchise moved from Baltimore to New York for the 1903 season.

1962

At Colt Stadium in Houston, thanks to a pair of three-run home runs by Roman Mejias, the Colt .45's, in their first-ever major league game, defeat the Cubs, 11-2. 1976

With the bases loaded and the Brewers trailing the Yankees by three runs, Don Money blasts Dave Pagan's 1-0 pitch deep into the left-field bleachers, circling the bases for an apparent walk-off grand slam. Billy Martin vehemently insists first base ump Jim McLean called a timeout before the pitch, leading to the play's nullification when the arbitrator admits he had, after denying the skipper's claim at first, in Milwaukee's eventual 9-7 heartbreaking loss.

1980

At Arlington Stadium's season opener, Jon Matlack and Yankee southpaw Ron Guidry match zeroes for nine innings. In the 12th, with his 1978 Opening Day nemesis, Richie Zisk, at the plate, Goose Gossage allows Mickey Rivers to score the game's only run from third base when his first and only pitch is wild, giving the Rangers a 1-0 victory.

1989	Dave Stieb pitches his third one-hitter in his past four starts when the Blue Jays beat the Yankees in the Bronx, 8-0. The 30 year-old right-hander had also limited Baltimore and Cleveland to a lone hit during his last two starts the previous season.

1992

Dave Eiland hits his only big-league home run in his first major league at-bat and becomes the first hurler to accomplish the feat which also allows a homer to the first batter he faced in the major leagues. In 1988, as a rookie for the Yankees, the Padres right-hander gave up a round-tripper to Paul Molitor, who was the first batter he faced in his big league debut.

2015	The Red Sox need six hours and 49 minutes to beat New York at Yankee Stadium, making the contest the longest game in franchise history. The 19-inning victory lasts 14 minutes longer to complete than a 2001 loss to the Rangers in Texas.

4/09/2021 24 astronauts throw 24 ceremonial first pitches as the Colt .45's become the Astros.

Dodger skipper Leo Durocher, feuding with the Yankees, is suspended for one year by commissioner Happy Chandler for an assortment of actions deemed detrimental to baseball, including association with known gamblers. The Brooklyn and New York clubs are both fined $2,000, and by order of the commissioner, the teams are not allowed to discuss the matter.

1963

As a favor to former Indians infielder Johnny Berardino, now known as Johnny Beradino, who plays Dr. Steve Hardy on General Hospital, Yogi Berra makes a cameo appearance on the popular ABC soap opera. The Yankee legend, known for his paradoxical contradictions, plays the role of Dr. Lawrence Berra, a brain surgeon.

1965

Houston begins playing in the 'Eighth Wonder of the World' when they host an exhibition game against the Yankees at the Astrodome, the first domed sports stadium in history. 1993

At the age of 46, Nolan Ryan becomes the oldest pitcher to start and win an Opening Day game when the Rangers win their home opener against the Red Sox, 3-1. Previously, Yankee southpaw Tommy John held the distinction, being 45 years old when he started and beat the Twins in the 1989 opener at the Metrodome.

2004	The Yankees and Joe Torre agree to a three-year extension. The contract also includes an additional six-year deal in which the 62 year-old manager will serve as a team advisor through the 2013 season.

2000	Blue Jay southpaw David Wells' nine-hit complete game 4-0 shutout against Texas at The Ballpark in Arlington snaps Kenny Rogers' 19-game home winning streak. The Gambler's accomplishment, compiled while hurling for the Yankees, A's, Mets, and Rangers, is the third-longest in major league history.

2003

In a frigid 35-degree home opener, with the fans chanting his name, Hideki Matsui hit his first major league home run, a grand slam into the right-field bleachers. After being greeted with a warm reception in the pregame ceremonies and a standing ovation after making a great defensive play, Godzilla receives a thunderous applause and curtain call from the sold-out Yankee Stadium crowd after his fifth-inning bases-full poke against the Twins.

2014

Yankee third baseman Yangervis Solarte becomes the first player in major league history to double six times in the first seven games of his career when he collects a pair of two-baggers in the team's 14-5 loss to Baltimore in the Bronx. The 26 year-old rookie, who will be traded to the Padres in July, along with minor leaguer Rafael De Paula, for Chase Headley and cash, ends the day with a .429 batting average, going 12-for-28 since the start of the season.

1969	At Washington's RFK Stadium, Ted Williams makes his managerial debut in front of President Nixon and a crowd of 45,113, a franchise attendance record for Opening Day. The Commander-in-Chief throws out the ceremonial first pitch before the Yankees' 8-4 defeat of the 'Splendid Splinter's' Senators.

2000	In a ceremony before the team's home opener, the Devil Rays retire Wade Boggs' uniform number 12. Although the former Red Sox and Yankees infielder spent only two years with Tampa Bay, he hit the first home run in franchise history and collected his 3000th hit with the team.

2010

According to its annual report, Forbes Magazine estimates the Yankees' value to be worth approximately $1.6 billion, nearly twice as much as any other major league franchise. The World Champs, who moved into a new ballpark last season, made $441 million in net revenue after adjustments for its payment to baseball's revenue-sharing program and the costs of financing its new stadium.

2012

Octavio Dotel, playing for his 13th team, breaks a major league record he previously shared with Mike Morgan, Matt Stairs, and Ron Villone. The 39 year-old Tiger reliever, who throws 1.1 scoreless innings against Boston, has also appeared with the Mets, Astros, A's, Yankees, Royals, Braves, White Sox, Pirates, Dodgers, Rockies, Blue Jays, and Cardinals.

Orlando Cepeda, who was specifically signed to fill the newly created position of the designated hitter, goes 0-for-6 when the Red Sox pound out 20 hits in a 15-5 rout of the Yankees at Fenway Park on Opening Day. The future Hall of Famer misses out on a place in baseball history when the first inning is extended by a misjudged bloop hit and two walks, giving Ron Blomberg, batting sixth for the Bronx Bombers, the opportunity to be the first player to come to the plate as the DH.

1973	The Yankees become the last American League team to abandon their flannel uniforms in favor of polyester. The team's new look on the road features white piping around the words New York on the front and around the numbers on the back.

1973

At Fenway Park, Ron Blomberg of the Yankees becomes the first designated hitter in major league history. In the historic plate appearance, Boomer draws a first-inning bases-loaded walk on a 3-1 pitch off Luis Tiant and will become the first DH to get a hit when he singles in the third frame of the 15-5 Red Sox rout of the Bronx Bombers.

1974

The Bronx Bombers begin their two-year stint at Shea Stadium, where the team will compile a 172-150 (.534) record during the renovations to the Stadium, with a 6-1 victory over Cleveland. 1982	A freak massive spring snowstorm brings subfreezing temperatures, high winds, and foot or more precipitation across the northeast. The blizzard-like conditions cause the postponement of home openers for the Yankees, Tigers, White Sox, Brewers, Indians, Phillies, and Pirates.

1984

After committing a two-out error in the bottom of the eighth inning to allow the eventual winning run to score in the Yankees' 7-6 loss to the Rangers at Arlington Stadium, shortstop Bobby Meacham is sent to the minors after the fourth game of the season on the orders of owner George Steinbrenner. The move, which stuns manager Yogi Berra, will prove to be a precursor to the 'Boss' firing him next season after the team drops ten of its first sixteen decisions.

In an exhibition game against the Yankees, 25,000 fans watch the Dodgers play their first game in Ebbets Field. 1925

Babe Ruth collapses at a railroad station in Asheville, North Carolina. The "bellyache heard round the world," so dubbed when a writer suggests that a hot dog and soda binge caused the illness, will require hospitalization and an operation, keeping the Yankees slugger out of the lineup for seven weeks. (Ed. Note: The Yankee slugger returns to the lineup on June 1, the same day Lou Gehrig begins his historic consecutive-game streak)

1934	Babe Ruth, sponsored by Quaker Oats, agrees to do a weekly show on NBC radio. The Sultan of Swat's broadcast salary for the 13-week series will be $4000 more than his reported Yankee contract of $35,000.
